Fist Fight' Falls Flat: A Review of Charlie Day's Lackluster Comedy

In 'Fist Fight', Ice Cube plays an intense and possibly psychotic history teacher who isn't above attacking students with a fire axe. Meanwhile, Charlie Day stars as a spineless English teacher who allows the students and faculty of a decaying Georgia high school to walk all over him.

The movie takes place on the last day of the school year, which coincides with 'Senior Prank Day' and the faculty being forced to re-interview for their jobs after extreme budget cuts. In this chaos, Ice Cube's character rats out Charlie Day's teacher after he severely disciplines a student. Instead of going postal on the school administration, Ice Cube refocuses his anger on Day by challenging him to a fist fight after school.

At times, 'Fist Fight' feels like it was written by that neighbor who yells at you from their bedroom window because you were standing too close to their nephew's car. The movie's attempts at edgy humor and youthful energy fall flat, making it feel decidedly old. The script is riddled with forced attempts at being cool and hip, using words like 'crack' and 'meth' in ways that are more cringe-worthy than funny.

One of the few highlights of the movie is a scene where a little girl performs Big Sean's hit song 'I Don't Fuck with You' at a talent show. It's a small moment that stands out in an otherwise lackluster comedy. Overall, 'Fist Fight' fails to deliver on its promises of youthful raunchy humor, instead feeling like a tired and outdated attempt at comedy.
